Professor Ian Adcock obtained his PhD in Molecular Pharmacology in 1987 London University. After undertaking MRC-funded positions in Edinburgh and in London he joined Professor Sir Peter J Barnes' group in 1990 at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) to work on the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoids in the lung. Professor Patricia Rivera is Professor of Medicine, Chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Co-Director of the North Carolina Lung Screening Registry.
Professor Rivera's commitment to improving the care of lung cancer patients has led her to dedicate a great deal of her time to promoting state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care. Her research interests have focused on the early detection of lung cancer, toxicities caused by therapies in lung cancer, and the prevalence of lung cancer in women. She is currently an active participant in the CHEST (American College of Chest Physicians) Lung Cancer Guidelines Initiative and served as an integral part of the guideline's development and implementation. Her expertise in the continuum of lung cancer care catapulted her interest in developing a multidisciplinary lung cancer screening (LCS) program at UNC. She is recognized as one of several pulmonologists with LCS program development and implementation expertise. She has been part of the UNC LCS initiative as a Co-Investigator, developing a lung screening registry, and as a Co-Investigator in the quality improvement of lung cancer screening implementation.
As Co-Director of the North Carolina Lung Cancer Screening Registry and through two NIH/NCI-funded grants, her research focuses on lung cancer screening implementation and the impact of co-morbidities on lung cancer screening outcomes. More recently, her collaboration with colleagues and work on disparities in eligibility and access to lung cancer screening has led me to explore genetic risk scores in lung cancer screening assessment, particularly in underserved populations
Throughout her career, she has appreciated the importance of building and expanding research collaborations and sharing scientific knowledge to move the science of risk assessment and early detection of lung cancer. In April 2022, she transitioned to the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) as Chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division and Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Rochester Wilmot Cancer Institute. She participates in the multidisciplinary lung cancer screening program at URMC, currently runs by the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine division. At URMC, she joined a team of researchers dedicated to developing further lung cancer screening research. Moreover, to truly make a difference in mitigating lung cancer disparities, collaborative work with colleagues at the Wilmot Cancer Institute in Rochester and research colleagues at UNC and other institutions is paramount.
Professor Rivera has been steadfastly committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of clinicians and clinical researchers throughout her career. She previously served as the Associate Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1998, she received the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Richard H. Whitehead Lecturer Award, an annual award presented to one faculty member based on "qualities of leadership, dedication, and devotion to medicine and teaching, and in recognition of distinguished contribution to the science and art of medicine." In 2018 she received the First Annual Pulmonary and Critical Care Division Faculty Teacher of the Year Award, given to the faculty member who "exemplifies excellence in patient care, teaching, mentoring, and professionalism."

His main research interest is to understand the serologic and phenotypic variation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. I hope to better define the pathogenesis and sub-classify these disorders, and use the data to inform management. I have been working on the micro-architectural changes of bones and joints in inflammatory arthritis using advanced imaging techniques. The results could shed light on the disease pathogenic mechanism and potentially predict the outcomes of the patients. I have also been studying the cardiovascular and infection risks of patients with rheumatologic diseases. With the ever-expanding armamentarium of biological and targeted drugs, I will strive to translate the better understanding of diseases to improved care of our patients using a personalized approach.
